Flap & semi spade rudder design in a ship

CUSTOMER: SHIPYARD
RELATED SERVICES: CFD, FEM, RUDDERS, DESIGN
SOFTWARE: FEMAP® and STAR-CCM+®.
SCOPE OF WORK:
• Technical data collection
• Calculations according classification society
• CFD rudder analysis and optimization
• Generation of 3D geometry using NX® programme
• Finite element structural calculations
• Analysis of results
• Manufacturing drawings
METHODOLOGY:
After a predesign based on the data collected from the customer, a CFD analysis was carried out.
Several different angles of rudder blade and flap were considered up to the maximum angle of the flap. The forces obtained in the CFD analysis were used in the FEM analysis and compared with the calculation according classification rules. The CFD procedure developed for rudder optimization includes geometry modification for optimal propulsive performance by means of RANSE CFD and including the rotating ship propeller.
In the case of semi-spade rudder, the ship has ice class notation polar class 5 so additional class requirements had been taken into account.
After the study, the mechanical calculations provide the necessary rudder stock and rudder blade scantlings to make the manufacturing drawings of the rudder components.
