Stern trawler optimization and performance analysis

STERN TRAWLER OPTIMIZATION AND PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS

Scope of work:

  • Data collection carrying out measurements on board different vessels for different operation conditions: propulsion parameters, fuel consumptions (principal power plant and electric power plant), ship speed, gas emissions, etc.
  • Obtaining of operational profile of each operation condition.
  • Optimization of hull and propulsion. Study of different configurations:

o Parametric study of principal dimensions. Bow and stern shape design.
o Seakeeping and maneuverability.
o Propulsion system.
o Streamlines and appendages.
o Global behavior analysis.

  • Electric power plant improvements:

o Numeric model for electric devices analysis on board.
o Development of electric distribution networks, energy storage, generation system of electricity, electric drive and conversion of electric power for the energy efficiency improvement.

  • Global analysis of different configurations:

o Hull with single screw.

– With bulbous bow.
– Without bulbous bow.

o Hull with twin screw.

– With bulbous bow.
– Without bulbous bow.

Results:
As a result of this project, it was obtained a new optimized hull and propulsion system with a significant improvement over current fleet.
The new hull shows an excellent performance and seakeeping on free sailing on rough seas.
The twin screw configuration developed with hybrid shaft generator allows optimal variable speed power generation together with a hybrid mode for low speed sailing with main engines turn off. The twin screw arrangement allows a much better towing thrust with a 21% fuel consumption reduction.
